COROMANDEL LIFE
SPRING 2013
That special day...
Sealed with a kiss.
Certified with a celebrant.
Making it all legal, here and abroad
In New Zealand all weddings must be performed by a registered
Marriage Celebrant. Once you’ve chosen who will perform the
ceremony, you’ll need a marriage license from the registry of
Marriages office.
Many celebrants are keen to help with more than just the
ceremony, helping submit all necessary forms and collect the
license if need be. Some are full on wedding planners.
A New Zealand wedding is legal in all countries. “Almost half of
my couples are from foreign countries,” says Pauanui resident
Anke Buhrfeindt who became a celebrant in 2008 after careers
as a childbirth educator and in the German Foreign Service.
Anke’s ceremonies, often in German or French, vary from relaxed
beach party to formal affairs with 120+ guests. “I can help
arrange details such as the bridal bouquet, or a decorative set-
up on the beach.”
Donna Brooke, was thrilled to recently become Tairua’s
newest marriage and civil union celebrant. Specialising in
‘beach weddings’, she wants to make couples’ special day
“unforgettable, exciting, relaxed, friendly and, most of all, fun
and inspiring.”
Civil union marriages have been recently legalized in NZ, but
couples will need to check that their unions are valid back in
their own country. Both advise couples to make sure of legal
situation at home. However if it is legal, the celebrant will help
get it set up here.

Saying “I DO” in the Kiwi OUTDOORS
The Coromandel’s spectacular coastlines and nature reserves just call out
to those wanting to tie the knot in gorgeous surroundings. But plan ahead
to hold your ceremony at a public beach or park: you (or your wedding
planner) will need to reserve a spot. Contact the Thames Coromandel
District Council (07 868 0200) or the Hauraki District Council (07 862
8609) to make a booking and settle the $54 fee. Tents or marquees
erected on public land need special permits, so allow time to sort these
and work with your marquee supplier. And – you know the saying, “Book
early to avoid disappointment.”
ON THE BEACH
Cathedral Cove
Yes, you can recite those special vows
at the cove if it’s a small wedding
party. Accessible by boat or a long
hike to the beach, Hahei Explorer is
licenced to land beach craft at this
secluded location. “After we shuttle
your guests to the cove,” explained
Shane Harnett, “we will deliver the
bride to wade ashore from our white
pontoon craft.” Of course, due to
distance and a lack of electricity,
Shane recommends that the reception
takes place elsewhere.
