Living and growing up in Tairua is the ultimate experience in terms of learning to surf.
But up until the
foundation of Tairua School’s Surf Academy, if nobody in your direct family or your circle of friends surfed, it was
hard to get started. The Surf Academy’s aim is to give all students at Tairua School an opportunity to surf.
Once a week, the Surf Academy meets at Tairua or Pauanui beach where the students learn to read the waves,
paddle a board, stand on the board and surf etiquette. At the end of summer, a competition is held so everyone
can show off the skills they’ve learned.
Thanks to Tairua’s Surf Academy, groups of children from all different community backgrounds can be found out
the back, enjoying the ocean together and sharing the love of surfng in our backyard. - Gia Garrick
