Tairua Community
Garden
by Carol Brockelsby
After thirty years of holidaying in Tairua, Dave and I fnally made the move from Wellington
to the winterless north. To reconnect with old friends, meet new ones and feel a part of the
community, we joined the Tairua Community Garden. Mostly we wanted to learn the art of
gardening–what to plant and when, how to prepare the soil, what is a weed and what isn’t.
We’re reaping the benefts of our efforts and have really noticed the difference between shop-
bought produce and what we’ve picked fresh from the garden.
We’ve enjoyed gaining skills and sharing experiences as well as catching up on the latest
gossip/news–of course. It has not been too onerous–a couple of hours a week on Wednes-
days from ten till noon, weather permitting. We are amazed at how much we get done in this
time–many hands do make light work.
The autumn and winter months were about getting the ground ready for planting and making
compost to keep our garden well fed. Spring was busy with growing seeds for summer crops
such as tomato, zucchini, eggplant, capsicum, chillies and lettuce. The garlic, planted at
winter solstice, will be ready for the summer solstice harvest. We’re hoping there will be
enough potatoes to feed us all over the summer and autumn. The focus now is keeping the
garden well watered, in anticipation of a hot, dry summer.
Come join us at the garden. It really is a lot of fun. Interested? Contact Keryn, 864 8397.
Place oil, white balsamic condiment, salt and pepper
into salad bowl and whisk to combine.
Gently tear the lettuce and add to the bowl along
with the avocado, hazelnuts and basil. With your
hands, gently toss to combine. Accompany each
serve with a wedge of lemon.
