This photo from 1968 shows the derelict condition of the once handsome homestead.

The building continued to be hammered by the elements, including a tree falling on the roof (see

photo below left) for another 30 years, before serious restoration efforts began in the late 1990s.

Interior rooms have been painstakingly decorated with period furniture,

some of which has been donated by pioneer families still living in the area.

TOURING ATHENREE

The Homestead is opens the first Sunday every

month through December and every Sunday in

January through March for visits and tours.

The Station Refreshment Rooms are also

available for events, occasions,

and tour and tea bookings for 6-10 people.

The Homestead is once again is the area’s

community centre, and a perfect venue for both

small and large groups. Book your wedding,

celebratory party or meeting at this unique

location. Guests will enjoy a walk in the gardens

and panoramic views over the Tauranga

Harbour in this beautiful park like setting. It

features a full commercial kitchen for catering.

Some of the activities at the Athenree

Homestead include a Sunday Tea, the annual

Christmas fair held outdoors on the lawn and

the “Night of the Ploughman” mystery night

held September last year.
