We were quite saddened to hear of the
passing of Barry Brickell, age 80, a true
Coromandel icon that will be greatly missed.
The professional potter who created the well
known Driving Creek Railway complex, died
Saturday 23 January.
Born in New Plymouth, Barry grew up in
Auckland. Although he had an interest
in pottery at an early age, he became a
teacher in Coromandel before devoting his
life to pottery (and his trains).
Barry purchased the property at Driving
Creek where his railway and pottery studio
now stand in 1974. Developing the scenic,
pottery-lined railway track, tunnels, and
the Eyeful Tower viewing platform took
decades of work. He replanted his hillsides
with native plants, and fenced off areas as a
wildlife preserve.
Barry died with a major project unfulfilled:
a large commercial wharf to serve
Coromandel...which would have included a
rail line, of course!

Scott Simpson, Coromandel MP, posted
this to his Facebook page;
“The passing of revered ceramics pioneer
and sculptor Barry Brickell is a great
loss to Coromandel and NZ. Barry was
a classic Coromandel character, famous
locally, nationally and internationally for
his art, the creation of the Driving Creek
Railway and his visionary community
contributions. Much of what we recognise
as contemporary Coromandel today has
been built upon foundations laid by him.
“I will miss his regular long letters,
typed on a manual typewriter,
offering his opinions and advice
on all manner of issues political,
local and artistic.”
(We too received long handwritten
letters from Barry and intend
to write more about this
extraordinary Coromandel
legend.
