Coffee Lala
“We take our time and do it right”. Whatever way they are doing it, it’s working.
This boutique, artisan coffee roasting business won another three awards for
2010–one silver and two bronze medals to add to the seven previous awards.
Nedilka Radojkovich & Mark Tugendhaft created the roasting business in 2002
“for the love of coffee”. To Mark, roasting coffee is a mixture of art and science.
“At Coffee LaLa we roast a selection of beans originating from a number of
countries to create our hand-crafted blends”, he explains. “Our 100% Arabica
beans are sourced from the World’s best plantations and roasted with individual
care. We are super proud of our award winning Fair Trade Organic”.
Coffee LaLa wasn’t their frst venture–they’ve done a lot together over the years!
“For 18 long years, we worked pretty much fulltime waging a successful battle
against overseas gold mining companies who wanted to rip up The Coromandel
and turn it into an industrial zone!” says Mark. The couple also ran a production
pottery business in the late 70’s and 80’s supplying shops and galleries, and
selling direct. Mark and Nedilka were briefy involved running co-operatives to
sell goods and, before starting Coffee LaLa, both worked at the same school. “It
just followed that we would set up Coffee LaLa together”, says Nedilka.
They have wildly different skills, but share the same philosophy. “Business is
not always just about money, one should always try for the very best product,
and really good, reliable service”. say Nedilka. She remarks that they would
have trouble selling something they didn’t like and feel proud of. “We think it’s
important to love what you are doing and enjoy those people you are dealing
with. Also if you hate ‘doing the accounts’ or anything else, make sure you pay
someone else to do it and get on with what you are best at”.
“We both have very strong opinions on just about everything, so there’s always
lots of talking at our place” shares Nedilka. “I recently found a tiny painting of
a cartoon lion hugging a zebra and gave it to my youngest grandson with my all
time favorite saying, ‘live life the way you want the world to be’“.
Asked what works best in their marrriage and business, Nedilka answers, “We
laugh a lot, don’t worry too much about the small things, cherish your friends
and family”. Mark adds, “Eat lots of great food, drink and be merry as often as
possible”.
What works worst? “If the surfs up and Mark has to roast”.

Ooh LaLa is one of our favourites, and Mark recently did
a special french roast for us with the organic free trade that’s fabulous. There is
not much that beats the aroma of CoffeeLaLa being ground fresh in the morning!
