PAKU VIEWS ISSUE 3 SPRING/SUMMER 2011-12
Giving Back to the Forests
Kauri 2000 was formed as a millennium project by Cliff
Heraud of Kauotunu, to “replace” kauri trees milled over
the last two centuries on the Coromandel Peninsula.
For over twelve years Kauri 2000 has been giving new
life to the forests. Over 35,000 seedlings have been
planted. The frst were planted in Kauaeranga Valley
and today, from Paeroa up the eastern seaboard to
Coromandel there are thousands of trees growing for the
beneft of future generations. Planting is done on public
land assuring the public access to “their” trees.
Many volunteers are involved in the planting of these
small trees, including students from Tairua, Mercury
Bay and St Peter’s Schools. The Coromandel Outdoor
Language Centre, Lions Clubs, and local citizens from
all parts of the Coromandel and New Zealand have toiled
for the beneft of all.
The cost of this project is covered from grants, public donations and various sponsors
such as Cranleigh Merchant Bank and A.R.C. (see story above). Starts are from locally
sourced seeds and planted as three-year-old seedlings.
One of the next projects is to install a Kauri 2000 sign at the entrance to Lynch Stream, in
conjunction with pupils at Tairua School who have already planted 550 seedlings at the far
end of the walk to Te Karo Bay. –Cherry Ladd

The Great Cranleigh Kauri Run
An annual event for the last seven years, has approximately 300 athletes running cross-
country over 15, 35 or 70 kilometre distances from Waikawau to Coromandel. A kauri
seedling is planted by members of the Spirit Of Coromandel Trust for each participant. The
trees planted as a result of this event now number in the thousands.
This Kauri Run is an off road trail run with a difference! The race course takes competitors
from Waikawau Farm Park, up and along the Central divide and into the township of
Coromandel taking between 2 and 5 hours. A tough run, but scenically beautiful with
views of the Pacifc Coast and Firth of Thames. There is also a shorter run (1–2 ½ hours).
Their goal is to plant 10,000 kauri trees over the next ten years so one day there will
be a magnifcent avenue of kauri trees running between Waikawau and Coromandel.
