PAKU VIEWS ISSUE 3 SPRING/SUMMER 2011-12
was another nice touch, setting the scene
for a great night out.
We were treated to the latest summer
season fashions, with interesting fabrics,
gorgeous new designs, and stunning
combinations. The seven models, all
local girls brave enough to strut their
stuff on the catwalk, rotated through 10
changes of clothes. There was defnitely
something for every occasion, style and
age on display (See photo.).
Karilyn and Paul have been hosting
fashion shows in both Tairua and Thames
since acquiring Milly’s on Main and Kayla,
the Thames store, early last year. Ladies
travel from all over the Coromandel and
as far away as Hamilton and Auckland
to attend. It is a wonderful evening’s
entertainment, but as I found out, you
do need to book early. Well done Karilyn,
Paul and Tairua's Top Models!
The Tohu wine & canapé evening at
Tairua’s Old Mill Café
was a roaring
success. Owners Linda and Jimmy
Crozier pulled out all the stops serving
seven different courses matched with
Tohu wines. David Kinsett, of Tohu
wines, did an excellent job controlling
the madding crowd as he showcased the
fabulous wines. My favourite was the hot
smoked salmon with hollandaise, served
on a herb favoured potato rosti and paired
with a new release 2010 Tohu Pinot Rose
from Nelson. The pressure was on behind
the scenes and Linda admits she stresses
out. “But once it’s all over, and we hear all
the great feedback”, husband Jim says,
“its worth it”. –Rowena Brown
We locals love
Kuaotunu’s Blackjack
Cafe and Gallery
in what we lovingly
call “downtown”. Pip and Paul have made
Blackjack the funkiest little coffee and
local art place around. Seating is mostly
outside on a variety of recycled tables and
chairs. It’s the best beach view and vista
of the northern Peninsula – it stretches
out and away to Moehau mountain in the
distance.
This seaside village boasts a store known
for large cone ice creams, the hall, fre
brigade and a brilliant, little hair salon in a
caravan. Paul’s son, Luke serves up Ital-
ian style, thin crust pizza from his pizza
oven next to the cafe. “Brilliant and oh so
The Mandel ..”
Whitianga’s Sangam
is known for truly
incredible Indian food - where every dish
tastes deliciously different and the decor
is so authentic. We went in one night and
someone in our party was gluten intole-
rent. No problems, at the drop of a hat
they produced a scrumptous banquet for
all 10 of us – and not a bit of gluten in
sight. –Nedilka Radojkovich

The magnifcent spring day we enjoyed at
Pauanui’s Lakes Resort
literally called
for bubbles to celebrate the warmth
of the coming summer sun. A relaxed
décor welcomed us as we stepped into
the spacious rattan couched foyer. From
the generous outdoor area overlooking
the gliding swans on the lake and the
monogrammed golfers in the background,
you could well be in a Powerball Lotto ad–
this scene is so South Floridian. The good
news is you don’t need an international
fight to get here. Head Chef, Trevor Heath
serves fresh uncomplicated food that is
reasonably priced. From Tairua, Lakes
Resort is only a 20 minute ride. Trevor
says, “Come out for a change of scenery’.
Milly’s On Main Street's
annual fashion
show in September packed the house at
Shells Restaurant in Tairua
. I’d made
the mistake of not booking early, but
luckily, with a late cancellation, was able
to grab the last of 80 seats.
The atmosphere was abuzz with
excitement. Shell’s Chef Nathaniel
prepared a sumptuous selection of hors
d’oeuvres and canapés that the crowd
enjoyed while waiting for the show to
begin. The complimentary glass of wine
