Iconic Tairua
Ohakune has its carrot and the Jaffas have their
sky tower and now Tairua has its own “brand”
to help identify our town and promote its special
qualities.
The Tairua Information Centre now uses a logo
designed and donated by talented local sculptress
Christine Hatton, which cleverly incorporates a
stylised Paku with the surf beach, surfer and
pinnacle. It has been used successfully on tee
shirts sold at the Information Centre, but we were
looking for something new.
Tairua Residents and Ratepayers Association
sponsored a competition for a symbol to depict our
town to the world. Entries were displayed at the
Information Centre during September encouraging
the public to vote for their favourite from 23
creative entries.
Choosing a winner was diffcult, but Anton Roest,
chairman of the TRRA, announced that the winner
of the $100 prize was Joe
Roper. His entry (pictured)
depicts a jandal and a
silhouette of Paku with sun,
surf and pohutukawa.
Well done Joe. Now we
need to get his image out so
that everybody can see what
Tairua has to offer.
A highlight this spring has been the infux of overseas rugby fans, mainly
French and Irish, but also visitors from all the world Cup nations.
It was
entertaining to engage in the friendly barracking of rival teams along with the
usual questions asked by visitors to our area. The haka kiwis were popular
purchases and means that as promised in the last issue of PakuViews, we are
able to donate $41 to Whenuakite Kiwi Care ($1 from each).
Brits at the Beach. Many of Tairua’s Clubs and Community groups participated
and the Information Centre was pleased to provide a central organisation point
to support the event committee.
Over 240 classic examples of British motoring paraded along Main Street and
onto Cory Park Domain where the Village Fete was held. As well as the cars on
show, a variety of food stalls and entertainment delighted all. The weekend was
a great fundraising opportunity and was not only fun for all but a boost for the
local businesses. Well done all.
