Many say this region is a reminder of what the
Coromandel once was, and offers something
special – a perfect destination where you
can put your feet up, find a little peace and
rejuvenation, and yet still have lots to do.
Just north of Coromandel Town, even locals
make the drive here for the unique products
available in this quaint village. It is well known
for its co-operatively owned and run Colville
General Store that sells a huge variety of goods
including fresh organic produce.
There’s also a café, small gallery, historic post
shop, school, community hall, motel, doctor’s
clinic, and several other small businesses
(see right). And Colville shops are the last
opportunity to stock up on provisions and fuel
before heading north.
Enjoy beautiful bays with sandy beaches, lush
forest, pastoral scenes of fiat lands and steep
hills where cattle, alpacas, sheep and goats
graze. Fossicking for semi-precious stones such
as carnelian and kauri gum is quite popular in
the area as well.
You’ll also find several walkways in the area
north of Colville, ranging from 20-minute strolls
to half-day hikes.
